Multi-Region AWS Migration

The client runs a consumer ocean-data platform — surf forecasts, live cameras, recorded clips and highlight reels — as a large, distributed workload in AWS N. California (us-west-1), one of the more expensive US regions. Moving it to Oregon (us-west-2) would cut the running cost of the same estate, but nobody held a complete picture of what "it" meant: six product workstreams shared buckets, queues, topics and CDN distributions across three separate AWS accounts, including a legacy account inherited from an earlier platform.

718 Resources Moved With Minimal Downtime

We began with discovery rather than migration. Every resource in scope was inventoried by service and by account, then each product workstream was traced end to end — from CDN domain through origin bucket, queue, function and cluster — so a per-service migration plan could be written and validated with the client before anything was touched. Non-production environments were migrated first as full dress rehearsals, and each caveat found there was folded back into the runbook used for the production cutovers into Oregon (us-west-2).

Automation & Reliability

Discovery produced a resource-level inventory — 718 resources across 20 AWS services and three accounts — rather than an estimate. Every item carried its account, region and owning workstream, so the client could see exactly what was moving and what was deliberately staying behind.

Performance & Scalability

The move paid for itself in run-rate. N. California (us-west-1) carries a premium over Oregon (us-west-2) across compute, storage and managed data services, and rebuilding the estate in Oregon (us-west-2) cut roughly 20% from the monthly bill for the same workload — the reason the client wanted the move in the first place. Existing tooling was kept: the estate was already defined in CloudFormation, Terraform and Serverless across 176 stacks, so the second region was built from the same definitions rather than a parallel toolchain the client's team would have had to learn.

Security & Compliance

Production cutovers were rehearsed before they were run. Each service was migrated first in a non-production environment to surface ordering and reconfiguration caveats, cutover windows were scheduled with the client rather than imposed, and upstream services were reconfigured as each component landed — keeping downtime to a minimum on a platform serving live cameras and forecasts.

What Moved

Roughly 1,200 resources were inventoried across the estate during discovery; 718 of them — about 60% — were in scope and migrated, at an average of 90 resources a week. A further 176 CloudFormation stacks, 90 CloudFront distributions and 60 application endpoints were mapped to their owning workstreams.
