AWS Workspaces for Biotech Teams

Three people working from their own laptop, tablet and desktop, connecting through a key-and-two-factor gateway into cloud-hosted virtual desktops governed by a directory, under a HIPAA and HITRUST shield, with an unopened laptop shipping box marked aside.

The client is a biotechnology company working in proteomics, where the desktop workload includes bioinformatics on clinical data — so contractor access sits inside their HIPAA and HITRUST obligations, not just their IT policy. They were issuing laptops to contractors and temporary staff, at a moment when hardware supply was unreliable, and wanted a controlled environment those people could reach from their own devices instead. A second need sat behind it: heavy analysis being run on Macs that would be better served by Linux desktops close to the data.

An engineer publishing a stack of desktop image templates into a catalogue of ten virtual desktops — Windows and Linux, some marked as higher-powered — all linked through one encrypted tunnel to a single directory.

Virtual Desktops Built Around Identity, Not IT Tickets

Discovery translated the desktop requirements into a Workspaces catalogue rather than a single build: ten role-based images spanning Windows and Linux, from a standard bundle for most staff to a high-performance bundle for the developer and bioinformatics seats. Access hangs off the client's existing Active Directory through an AD Connector over a dedicated VPN, so a contractor is granted and revoked in the directory the client already runs — no second identity system, no separate joiner-leaver process.

Key Benefits & Outcomes

The results speak for themselves — here's how this engagement delivered measurable improvements across performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Access & Identity

A new contractor gets a desktop from the catalogue rather than a machine shipped out, configured on arrival and chased down at contract end. Because the Workspaces are visible in the client's own Active Directory and protected by multi-factor authentication, joining and removing someone is a directory change — and Workspaces bills monthly per user, so a seat stops costing anything when the contract does.

Resilience & Backup

Backups were built to the client's stated recovery point, with snapshots on a twelve-hour cycle, replicated across regions, and the master images themselves replicated cross-region so a rebuild does not depend on one region surviving. Backups are also streamed off AWS entirely into Azure, which is what the client wanted for off-site redundancy.

Compliance & Visibility

The environment was built to the client's regulated obligations: desktops encrypted at rest, multi-factor authentication on access, and no clinical data leaving the controlled environment onto a contractor's own device. CloudTrail was enabled across the estate for audit visibility, and a CloudWatch dashboard was built around the three metrics the client's team said they would actually watch — with the log stream made available so it could feed their own monitoring later. The result meets the HIPAA and HITRUST standards the client works under.

A compliance wall of green status checks, audit logs and gauges beside cloud desktops under a HIPAA and HITRUST shield, with snapshots replicating to a second region and a copy held outside the cloud.

How It Was Delivered

01
Discovery

Review the current computing requirements and decide what translates into a virtual desktop.

02
Active Directory

Stand up the AD Connector and the VPN connection back to the client's own directory.

03
Workspaces & Images

Author the role-based images, launch the desktops, and set snapshots, cross-region replication and the off-cloud copy.

04
Monitoring & Reporting

Enable CloudTrail and build a CloudWatch dashboard over the metrics the client's team chose.

05
Testing & Handoff

Validation and a working session passing every activity to the client's IT team.

What This Project Means For Us

Virtual desktops are usually sold as a cost story. This one was an access story: the client's problem was giving contractors a controlled environment on their own hardware, in a business where the data on that desktop is clinical and regulated. Hanging the whole catalogue off their existing Active Directory is what made it administrable — the compliance boundary stayed where their team already manages it.

Technical Highlights

Discovery of the desktop requirements before any image was built

Ten role-based Workspaces images spanning Windows and Linux
Standard bundle for most staff, high-performance bundle for developer and bioinformatics seats
AWS Directory Service AD Connector bridging the client's own Active Directory
Dedicated site-to-site VPN carrying the AD Connector traffic
Launched Workspaces visible and manageable inside the client's directory
Multi-factor authentication on desktop access, encryption at rest
Snapshots on a twelve-hour cycle, replicated across regions
Master images replicated cross-region, backups streamed off-cloud to Azure
CloudTrail enabled, plus a CloudWatch dashboard over three chosen metrics
Testing, validation and a joint handoff session with the client's IT team
Built to the client's HIPAA and HITRUST obligations for clinical data
